“미국 의회여, 컴퓨터과학 교육 예산 늘려주오”

미국 IT기업과 비영리단체들이 4월26일 의회에 컴퓨터과학(Computer Science, CS) 교육 예산을 요청하는 발표문을 공개했다. CS 교육에 필요한 예산을 확충하기 위해 여론 및 국회의 관심을 끌려는 노력으로 보인다. 아예 온라인 청원사이트를 통해 많은 사람의 지지를 호소하고 있다.

컴퓨터과학교육연합과 코드닷오아르지가 공개한 보도자료에 따르면 현재까지 민간부분에서 CS 교육을 위해 모인 후원금은 총 4800만달러, 우리돈 약 550억원이다. 마이크로소프트(MS), AT&T, 구글, 오미다이어네트워크, 마크 주커버그 페이스북 CEO, 제프 베조스 아마존 CEO 등이 뜻을 모아 후원했으며, 특히 구글, MS, 인포시스재단 USA가 500만~1천만달러 규모의 추가 후원을 했다고 밝혔다. 현재 이들이 국회에 요청하는 예산은 2억5천만달러, 우리돈 약 2900억원이다.

공개 발표문에서는 “미국 부모 중 90%가 컴퓨터과학을 학교에서 바로 배울 수 있는 환경을 원하고 있다”라며 “이러한 여론에도 지난 3분기 학교에서는 의미있는 CS 수업이 이뤄지지 않았다”라고 밝혔다. 또한 “이 문제는 예산를 늘리지 않고선 해결할 수 없다”라고 설명했다.

‘공립학교에 CS 교육 지원‘이라는 이름으로 올라온 청원에는 100명이 넘는 유명인사가 이미 서명을 했다. 팀 쿡 애플 CEO, 에릭 슈미트 알파벳 회장, 잭 도시 트위터 CEO, 사티아 나델라 MS CEO 등 IT 기업 뿐만 아니라 월트디즈니, 월마트, 아메리칸항공, 메리어트호텔 운영사 등 미국의 주요 기업 임원의 이름이 올라왔다. 또한 30여명의 미국 주지사, 교육 기관 및 비영리 교육 단체들의 임원 이름도 함께 볼 수 있다.

올해 1월 버락 오바마 미국 대통령은 ‘모두를 위한 컴퓨터과학(Computer Science for All)’ 프로젝트’를 시작하고 컴퓨터과학 교육 정책을 국가핵심 과제로 삼고 있다.
